Brief Annotation: Elmer the elephant is tired of standing out and being the only one in his herd with bright, multicolored patchwork skin. Wanting to fit in with everyone else, Elmer goes off one day and covers himself in elephant-colored berries. Upon returning to his herd, now blending in with all the other elephants, Elmer realizes that his special gift is not just skin-deep and that he’s happiest being himself. In an honor to Elmer, the other elephants declare that each year on that day, they will celebrate by decorating themselves with different colors, while Elmer will paint himself the traditional “elephant color.”
Your Rating (1-5) and why: 4.5—Elmer is a fun story about staying true to yourself while relaying the message that we all have special gifts that make us unique. The illustrations are lively and bold with great use of color. The ending is very charming, depicting the herd of elephants with bright, multicolored decorations while celebrating in the Elmer’s Day parade.
