Welcome!

You have accessed the blog site for Choosing and Using Books for Children. Throughout the term we'll use our blog to record the books we read and the ideas we have for using them when we're teachers. By the end of March, our class will have read at least 280 books. Happy reading!

Two important protocol actions for EVERY post:
1. Underline or italicize all book titles (choose one formatting style and stick with it--underline OR italicize for all book titles)
2. Add your name in the "label" box before you post each documentation.

One important recommendation:
Create your documentations in a separate Word document, then cut and paste in a blog post.

Rattletrap Car

Book Title: Rattletrap Car

Author(s): Phyllis Root

Illustrator/Photographer/Artist: Jill Barton

Publisher: Candlewick Press

Copyright Date: 2001

Genre: Fantasy picturebook

Brief Annotation: Poppa and his three children, Junie, Jakie, and the baby, want to drive to the lake to cool off on a hot summer day, but Poppa doesn’t know if the car will make it. The kids insist and plead with him, so he agrees to give it a go and they pack up and set off for the lake. Along the way, a series of car troubles arise, causing them to think of creative solutions to fix the old rattletrap car using the items they have packed.

Your Rating (1-5) and why: 4—Root incorporates lively language, nonsense words, and rhythmic repetition into her story about a family trip to the lake. I think young children will enjoy the many onomatopoeias Root uses as well as the repetition, which helps them predict what will come next. The watercolor illustrations add to the color and silliness of Rattletrap Car, making for a fun read aloud.

Readers who will like this book: Children who like silly stories with fun language; kids who like to use their imagination; listeners who like to participate in read-alouds

Question to ask about this book before a read aloud: Have you ever found yourself faced with a problem that required an imaginative or unusual solution? What did you do to “fix” the situation?

Optional, but noted as extra effort:

1. Interest Level: Kindergarten—grade 2

2. Grade Level Equivalent (grade): 2.6

3. List awards: Volunteer State Book Award (Tennesse)-Master List, NCTE Notable Children's Book, Oppenheim Toy Portfolio Gold Award Winner
