Welcome!

You have accessed the blog site for Choosing and Using Books for Children. Throughout the term we'll use our blog to record the books we read and the ideas we have for using them when we're teachers. By the end of March, our class will have read at least 280 books. Happy reading!

Two important protocol actions for EVERY post:
1. Underline or italicize all book titles (choose one formatting style and stick with it--underline OR italicize for all book titles)
2. Add your name in the "label" box before you post each documentation.

One important recommendation:
Create your documentations in a separate Word document, then cut and paste in a blog post.

Alphabet Under Construction

BASIC DOCUMENTATION
Book Title: Alphabet Under Construction

Author(s): Denise Fleming

Illustrator/Photographer/Artist: Denise Fleming and David Powers

Publisher: Henry Holt and Company, LLC

Copyright Date: 2002

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Brief Annotation:
A mouse builds the alphabet using various techniques that starts with each letter he is creating.

Your Rating (1-5) and why: 5
Absolutely cute! It even has a calendar depicting his schedule. The book is a creative way to introduce new vocabulary and sounds to students and demonstrate a new spin on an important skill.

Readers who will like this book:
Adults; Ages 3-5; Students who work with or have watched someone build things

Teaching Strategy from Yopp & Yopp :
Writing and Bookmaking Activities-Graduated-Pages books (p. 142)
This activity promotes students to create their own books using their own ideas.
I like this strategy for students to create an alphabet book because it allows for students to express individual creativity and it allows for students to demonstrate knowledge over time. Learning the alphabet and its sounds is a long process and this would be an enjoyable task to gradually complete.

Question to ask about this book before a read aloud:
What are some materials or tools ‘you’ use to build?
Have ‘you’ ever build something using tools?

Optional, but noted as extra effort:

1. Interest Level (age): 4-7

2. Grade Level Equivalent (grade): 1.4

3. List awards
American Library Association Notable Children's Books
Booklist Editors' Choice

4. Does this book have a book trailer? No
