Welcome!

You have accessed the blog site for Choosing and Using Books for Children. Throughout the term we'll use our blog to record the books we read and the ideas we have for using them when we're teachers. By the end of March, our class will have read at least 280 books. Happy reading!

Two important protocol actions for EVERY post:
1. Underline or italicize all book titles (choose one formatting style and stick with it--underline OR italicize for all book titles)
2. Add your name in the "label" box before you post each documentation.

One important recommendation:
Create your documentations in a separate Word document, then cut and paste in a blog post.

Kitten's First Full Moon

BASIC DOCUMENTATION
Book Title: Kitten’s First Full Moon
Author(s): Kevin Henkes

Illustrator/Photographer/Artist: Kevin Henkes

Publisher: Greenwillow Books (an imprint of Harper Collins Publishers)

Copyright Date: 2004

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Brief Annotation: The story shows a kitten’s imagination of trying to understand her first full moon and her attempts to reach it. When she sadly gives up and goes home, she learns she has a surprise waiting for her.

Your Rating (1-5) and why: 5
I really liked this book. It was heart-warming and cute. I envisioned using this text as a stepping stone to using student’s/kids’ imaginations of objects

Readers who will like this book: Ages 4-6

Teaching Strategy from Tompkins:
#20 Interactive Read-Aloud
Interactive Read-Aloud is a chance for students to become active participants in read-aloud activities before, during and after a book is read.
I like the idea of using this strategy with Kitten’s First Full Moon because students can express their imagination and ‘feed’ off each other’s ideas. I also like the idea of continuing to stretch imaginations by creating after-reading activities that allow students to express their creative side.
This would be a great book to ‘jump-start’ this process while using peer discussions to assist or encourage those that may need/want it.

Question to ask about this book before a read aloud:
Why would a kitten be interested in the moon?
What is a full moon? Or What are the different shapes of the moons?

Optional, but noted as extra effort:

1. Interest Level (age): 5-7

2. Grade Level Equivalent (grade): 1.7
