Welcome!

You have accessed the blog site for Choosing and Using Books for Children. Throughout the term we'll use our blog to record the books we read and the ideas we have for using them when we're teachers. By the end of March, our class will have read at least 280 books. Happy reading!

Two important protocol actions for EVERY post:
1. Underline or italicize all book titles (choose one formatting style and stick with it--underline OR italicize for all book titles)
2. Add your name in the "label" box before you post each documentation.

One important recommendation:
Create your documentations in a separate Word document, then cut and paste in a blog post.

Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse

BASIC DOCUMENTATION
Book Title: Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse

Author(s): Kevin Henkes

Illustrator/Photographer/Artist: Kevin Henkes

Publisher: Greenwillow Books

Copyright Date: 1996

Genre: Realistic Fiction

Brief Annotation: Lilly loves her teacher (Mr. Slinger). While visiting her grandmother, she came back with: shiny glasses (like her teachers), a purse and shiny coins. Lilly cannot wait to show her class and especially her teacher but what will happen when Mr. Slinger takes her new items away for interrupting the class?

Your Rating (1-5) and why: 3
I think this book was an average read. There didn’t seem to be anything that grabbed my attention as being special. I do think it is a book that would be acceptable to have in a collection due to vocabulary and art that is displayed in the text.

Readers who will like this book: students that like to read; those that like to play ‘dress-up’; those that like to watch pictures as others read

Teaching Strategy from Tompkins :
#33 Quickwrites (pp. 91-93)
Quickwrites are a chance for students to respond to a question or comment for 5-10 after reading or a read-aloud.
I like this idea for Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse because there are many chances for inference questions (i.e. how do we know Lilly was upset after Mr. Slinger took her items away?). There are also opportunities to write about feeling or connections.

Question to ask about this book before a read aloud:
Why shouldn’t we ‘act’ when we are angry?
Have you ever gotten upset with someone you really liked? How did you respond?

Optional, but noted as extra effort:

1. Interest Level (age): 5-7

2. Grade Level Equivalent (grade): 3.5

3. List awards
• Bulletin Blue Ribbon (The Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books)
• ALA Notable Children’s Book • Kentucky Bluegrass Award
• ALA Booklist Editors’ Choice
