Welcome!

You have accessed the blog site for Choosing and Using Books for Children. Throughout the term we'll use our blog to record the books we read and the ideas we have for using them when we're teachers. By the end of March, our class will have read at least 280 books. Happy reading!

Two important protocol actions for EVERY post:
1. Underline or italicize all book titles (choose one formatting style and stick with it--underline OR italicize for all book titles)
2. Add your name in the "label" box before you post each documentation.

One important recommendation:
Create your documentations in a separate Word document, then cut and paste in a blog post.

Do Unto Otters

Book Title: Do Unto Ottters: A Book about Manners

Author(s): Laurie Keller

Illustrator/Photographer/Artist: Laurie Keller

Publisher: Henry Holt and Co., LLC

Copyright Date: 2007

Genre: Picture Book – The Golden Rule

Brief Annotation:

Mr. Rabbit wonders if he will be able to get along with his new neighbors, the otters, but then his wise friend (an owl of course) reminds him of the golden rule.

Your Rating (1-5) and why:

5 – This is a fun and witty story about the golden rule. The story outlines the core values of

the golden rule without being too preachy or “teachy.” I think students would enjoy listening to this story and it is a great way to connect those core values to classroom values.

Readers who will like this book:

A great read aloud for elementary-aged children to teach the golden rule. Any reader who likes puns and silly characters and illustrations would love this book.

Question to ask about this book before a read aloud:

Do you know the golden rule?

Do you know what ‘Do unto others as you would have others do unto you’ means?
