Welcome!

You have accessed the blog site for Choosing and Using Books for Children. Throughout the term we'll use our blog to record the books we read and the ideas we have for using them when we're teachers. By the end of March, our class will have read at least 280 books. Happy reading!

Two important protocol actions for EVERY post:
1. Underline or italicize all book titles (choose one formatting style and stick with it--underline OR italicize for all book titles)
2. Add your name in the "label" box before you post each documentation.

One important recommendation:
Create your documentations in a separate Word document, then cut and paste in a blog post.

Otto Runs for President

Book Title: Otto Runs for President

Author(s): Rosemary Wells

Illustrator/Photographer/Artist: Rosemary Wells

Publisher: Scholastic Press

Copyright Date: 2008

Genre: Contemporary realistic fiction

Brief Annotation: Oto’s school is holding an election! Charles and Tiffany are both running, but neither of them seems focused on what the students want! Oto decides to find out what friends at school really want as he tosses his hat in the ring. While Charles and Tiffany are busy waging a smear campaign, Oto is even listening to the kindergarteners! On election day Oto emerges victorious and learns that being president is hard work!

Your Rating (1-5) and why: (5) I like this book! I thought of it right away when I started looking at presidents and leadership. Oto quickly learns that a real leader isn’t only concerned about themselves, and in order to win an election he needs to listen to everybody! This book provides a great avenue for talking about leadership.

Readers who will like this book: Students who will like this book are kids who are interested in friend groups at school and, as they get older, students who are interested in being a class leader or representative.

Question to ask about this book before a read aloud:  What does a president do? Do you know who our president is? How do people decide who their president will be?
