Welcome!

You have accessed the blog site for Choosing and Using Books for Children. Throughout the term we'll use our blog to record the books we read and the ideas we have for using them when we're teachers. By the end of March, our class will have read at least 280 books. Happy reading!

Two important protocol actions for EVERY post:
1. Underline or italicize all book titles (choose one formatting style and stick with it--underline OR italicize for all book titles)
2. Add your name in the "label" box before you post each documentation.

One important recommendation:
Create your documentations in a separate Word document, then cut and paste in a blog post.

From Acorn to Zoo

Book Title: From Acorn to Zoo… and Everything in Between in Alphabetical Order

Author & Illustrator: Satoshi Kitamura

Publisher: Farrar, Straus and Giroux

Copyright Date: 1992

Genre: Picturebook: Contemporary Realistic Fiction

Brief Annotation: An alphabet book that literally takes you from acorn to zoo and everything in between. Lots of colorful and silly illustrations make learning letters and words fun. Sometimes you have to look closely (don’t miss the tiny kitten under the table!), but there are nearly 400 words for you to explore.

Your Rating (1-5) and why: 4 – I really like the style of illustrations in this alphabet book. There is so much to look at on each page and the author includes more than your usual alphabet book words – with nearly 400 words included you have to go beyond apple, ball and zipper! This is an alphabet book that will be interesting to a range of ages.

Readers who will like this book: This book will be interesting to little ones (4-5) learning the alphabet, letters and naming things, to those slightly older (6-8) who are recognizing more words and attaching meaning to those words. There is so much to see that it’s one to return to many times to get all its benefits.

Question to ask about this book before a read aloud: Why do you think this book is called From Acorn to Zoo? What do you think that means? What’s all over the tiger? (on the cover of the book) – Does that give us a clue?

Interest Level (age): 4-8
